Sydney Metro City
Australia
Sydney Metro is Australia’s biggest public transport project, revolutionising how Australia’s biggest city travels with fast, reliable turn-up-and-go metro services and fully accessible stations.Sydney Metro City opened in August 2024 with seamless operations, bringing driverless train services through the CBD in an Australian first.
Metro trains are now running from Sydney’s north west region under Sydney Harbour, and through new underground stations in the CBD. Sydney Metro City consists of new 15.5 kilometre twin tunnels and track from Chatswood to Sydenham.
The OTS2 Public Private Partnership (OST2 PPP) is a fundamental component of Sydney Metro City. It delivered the trains, core systems, systems integration, and seamless incorporation of the City section with the existing Metro North West Line – now known as the M1 Line. It is also responsible for operations and maintenance of the M1 Line.
The OTS2 PPP is between Sydney Metro (SM) and NRT Group and its Core Contractors: MTR Corporation (Sydney) (MTR) and Metro Trains Sydney (MTS).
Sydney Metro is Australia’s most technologically advanced railway and is Australia’s only driverless train service.
The project’s successful objectives included: improving the quality of the transport experience for customers; providing a transport system that is able to satisfy long-term demand; growing public transport patronage and mode share; supporting the global economic corridor; serving and stimulating urban development; improving the resilience of the transport network; improving the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the public transport system; and implementing a feasible solution recognising impacts, constraints, and delivery risk.
